This database contains expert assessments of the potential of drugs to provoke attacks of acute porphyria and is intended for use by health care professionals. Compiled by Bo Zhou and Peter V. Tishler, M. D., Channing Laboratory and Genetics Division, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA.

The information provided on this website partly arises from the drug data collection within the EPNET project which has received funding from the European Union, in the framework of the Public Health Programme. European Porphyria Network (EPNET). The European Porphyria Network (EPNET) is a health information priority for developing strategies and mechanisms for preventing, exchanging information on and responding to non-communicable disease threats, including rare diseases. EPNET is a project arising from the European Porphyria Intiative (EPI) (www.porphyria-europe.org) funded by the INSERM.

Our list contains most drugs available in South Africa at present. Note that new drugs are constantly being introduced, and the absence of a drug from this list does not mean that its safety can be assumed.


The list is presented in two ways: in alphabetical order, and then grouped together into common indications for medication, such as Asthma, Diabetes etc. You can also print out the entire list for your reference. Check back from time to time as we do update it as new information becomes available.
